5 new finance roles AI is creating in India GCCs

The story that AI will eliminate finance jobs is the wrong story. The right story is that AI is restructuring the finance org chart. Routine bookkeeping, AP, AR and rules based compliance work is being automated. In its place, five new roles are emerging that did not exist in any finance org chart five years ago. India based GCCs are now the dominant hiring market for all five.

1. Finance Data Product Owner

Treats finance data as a product. Defines the data contract between source systems, the data lake, FP&A models and consumer dashboards. Measures adoption and accuracy as the headline metric. Without this role, FP&A teams spend 60% of their time reconciling data instead of producing insight. Pay range in India: INR 65 lakh to 1.1 crore total compensation.

2. Digital Controller

A controller built for the AI era. Owns the close, reconciliations, IFRS or US GAAP accuracy and audit readiness, but designs the close as an automated pipeline rather than a checklist of human steps. Owns the bot inventory, the model inventory and the exception queue. Compresses the close from 10 days to 3 while strengthening controls. Pay range: INR 80 lakh to 1.4 crore.

3. ESG Strategy Architect

Translates BRSR, CSRD, ISSB and SASB obligations into operating model design. Owns the carbon ledger the same way a controller owns the financial ledger. CSRD applies to any group with EUR 150 million plus EU revenue from FY 2025; the role is now non optional. Pay range: INR 60 lakh to 1.2 crore.

4. Finance AI Model Steward

Owns the lifecycle of every AI and ML model used in finance: forecasting, anomaly detection, AP automation, customer credit scoring. Maintains the model risk register, runs validation cycles, signs off on production deployment and tracks drift. Auditors are now asking for model inventories; this role makes that auditable. Pay range: INR 55 lakh to 1.0 crore.

5. Predictive Insights Lead

Owns the shift from descriptive FP&A to predictive and prescriptive FP&A. Builds rolling forecast models, scenario engines and driver based plans that drive board level decisions. Annual budgets are dead in fast moving industries; the companies that allocate capital quarterly using driver based forecasts outperform. Pay range: INR 70 lakh to 1.3 crore.

The hiring sequence that works

Start with the Finance Data Product Owner. Without clean data, the other four roles cannot produce results. Then hire the Digital Controller to compress the close. Then the Predictive Insights Lead to turn the freed capacity into forward looking work. ESG Architect and AI Model Steward follow at month 12 to 18 as the centre matures.
