Bangalore at a crossroads: is it still India's silicon capital?

Rent is up, attrition is up, traffic is famous. Yet Bangalore still wins more deep-tech and AI GCCs than every other Indian city combined. Here is why the gravity has not shifted.

    TL;DR

Rent is up, attrition is up, traffic is famous. Yet Bangalore still wins more deep-tech and AI GCCs than every other Indian city combined. Here is why the gravity has not shifted.

Every year, someone declares that Bangalore is done. Every year, the city absorbs more Fortune 500 GCC mandates than the rest of India put together. The reason is unfashionable but real: density of senior product engineering talent at the staff and principal level, the kind you cannot build in five years anywhere else.

The compounding effect of two decades of leadership

Bangalore is the only Indian city with thousands of engineers who have shipped 0 to 1 products, scaled them to 100 million users, and then left to repeat the cycle. AI, ML platforms, distributed systems, developer tools, semiconductor design: these need not just engineers but engineers who have been here before. Bangalore has them.

What Bangalore is the wrong answer for

    • High volume, process driven Accounting and Controllership work: Pune is cheaper, more stable, faster to hire.
    • BFSI middle office and regulatory work: Mumbai wins on regulator proximity and BFSI depth.
    • Japanese or German engineering captives needing industrial corridor adjacency: Pune.
    • Cost-led BPO and shared services: Tier 2 cities are 30 to 40% cheaper.

What Bangalore is unambiguously the best at

    • AI and ML platform engineering, foundation model fine tuning, MLOps
    • Deep product engineering and platform teams for global SaaS companies
    • Semiconductor design and EDA, especially for advanced nodes
    • Cybersecurity engineering, SRE, observability at hyperscale
    • Venture-grade tech leadership hiring (CTOs, VP Engineering, Principal Engineers)

    The candid read

Bangalore costs more, attrition is higher, the commute is brutal. None of that has dislodged it because the work it does best cannot be done anywhere else in India yet. Pick Bangalore when the work is hard, the talent is senior, and the parent is willing to pay for excellence. Pick Pune or Mumbai when the work is critical but the talent is mid-level and the parent wants stability.
